City Launches 'Be Pesticide Free' Campaign
Feb. 09, 2006
The City of Kelowna is launching a new campaign encouraging residents to reduce pesticide use and explore pesticide alternatives for the home and garden. To promote the "Be Pesticide Free" campaign, the Environment Division is offering Pesticide Free lawn signs and carabiner key chains that include "recipe" cards for creating eco-friendly pesticide alternatives such as "hot and spicy pest repellent", "vinegar weed eradicator" and "orange zest".
The City is also establishing a Pesticide Bylaw Advisory Committee to research community pesticide reduction strategies, pesticide bylaw formation and pesticide alternatives. The City is asking interested members of the general public and stakeholders from various interest groups to submit applications to participate in the advisory process. Applications will be accepted and reviewed up to Friday March 3rd, 2006.
For 2006, Kelowna residents who want to minimize unwanted exposure to pesticides should register their household with the Commercial Pesticide Notification Registry Program, which is up and running for the third consecutive year.
Registrants are notified by commercial spray operators prior to commercial pesticide application occurring on abutting residential properties. The Pesticide Notification Registry only applies when commercial spray operators are applying pesticides to residential properties, and is not applicable if a resident or neighbouring agricultural property is applying the pesticides.
Residents who are interested in signing up for the Commercial Pesticide Notification Registry are asked to do so by March 15, 2006. Re-registration is required annually, in order to keep the registry accurate and up to date; therefore, anyone who registered in 2005 must re-register if they wish to be included in this year's notification program.
When registering residents are asked to provide their name, street address, postal code, phone number, email address, preference for same day or previous day notification and reasons for registering.
