Dear Mayor and Council,
I/we are writing to encourage you as a Council
to adopt a pesticide by-law in our community
that would ban the use of cosmetic pesticides
such as 2,4-D. It is well known that the
majority of misuse of pesticides in our community
is a direct result of homeowners. Alternatives
to pesticides exist and can be implemented.
Pesticides are toxins that are well known
to cause harm to humans and animals. As councilors,
you have a mandate to protect the health
of citizens in the community. Once sprayed,
pesticides cannot be isolated. They spread
through the air, ground and water. Pesticide
exposure can occur to humans and animals
when they transit through sprayed areas.
Exposure can continue if they enter indoor
premises with residues attached to their
feet or hands. Taking action to restrict
the use of pesticides will benefit the overall
health of the community.
Restricting the use of pesticides will reduce contamination within
the City and the lake. This will help improve water, ground and air
quality. I/we respectfully request that you support the immediate implementation
of a pesticide bylaw in our community. I/we look forward to your support
on this issue.
Environmentally yours,
