KELOWNA
RESIDENTS NEED TO REGISTER EARLY TO RECEIVE NOTIFICATON OF PESTICIDE
SPRAYS
If you registered last year for the City of Kelowna’s ‘Pesticide
Notification Registry’, you still need to re-register this
year to remain on the list. EarthCare has been assured by the City
that should residents be late in responding, you will still be able
to register your property. We encourage all concerned citizens to
register early with the City so you can receive proper notification
and take the appropriate precautions.
REGISTRATION
To register please phone 469-8556 or email ask@kelowna.ca
Please provide your name, phone number, and address, including your
postal code.
Please indicate if you would like Previous Day or Same Day Notification
and your reason for being added to the registry.
BACKGROUND NOTIFICATION
EarthCare was successful in November 2003 of convincing the City
of Kelowna to develop a ‘Pesticide Notification Registry’.
This is a currently a voluntary program for the spray operators
to participate in. Operators have agreed to notify all registrants
prior to any spray operations taking place on abutting properties.
The program is designated for residential properties.
The Notification Registry was endorsed by City Council to provide
a level of comfort to residents concerned about spray applications.
It was recently decided by Council to continue the Registry for
2005.
The prudent use of chemical sprays is both a health and an environmental
concern. It is important to note that most of the pesticide applicators
are still spraying pesticides that are banned from use by homeowners.
Approximately 8,000 residential customers in Kelowna use the services
of commercial spray companies.
REGISTRATION CRITERIA
Privacy Provisions
Property owners who register must provide personal information such
as their name, address, and telephone number. Their personal information
will be supplied in confidence to commercial spray operators for
the express purpose of property owner notification. The registry
will be in compliance with the Freedom of Information and Privacy
Act.
The City of Kelowna has developed two notification categories:
- Previous Day Notification
- Same Day Notification
Please supply a reason for notification (for example windows are
kept open, children or pets are in the yard). If the spray operator
knows the reason for notification he will watch for the applicable
conditions; if those conditions exist spraying should not occur.
Information residents might request from the pesticide spray company
when they call. This is in addition to personal notification.
1. Is your company going to post the pesticide application with
a
noticeable sign indication the time, pesticide used, and health
precautions?
2. Request a health and safety sheet outlining the hazards associated
with exposure to the pesticide the spray company is applying.
3. Is the pesticide banned from use by homeowners?
4. Does your company employ alternatives to the use of pesticides?
Request to the City of Kelowna
1. The City has informed EarthCare that it will only update the
Registry once per month. Please request that you name be added
immediately to the registry to ensure you are notified.
2. Please email a copy of your request to us so we can track it
on the Registry. Email the City of Kelowna at ask@kelowna.ca
