EarthCare congratulates Kelowna
for renewing Pesticide Notification Registry
For Immediate Release
November 23, 2004
The Canadian EarthCare Society (EarthCare) is “extremely
pleased” that Kelowna City Council has renewed its Pesticide
Notification Registry program for 2005. In 2004, 284 residents signed
up for notification. As well, Council has reaffirmed that no doctor's
note will be required to register next year, and residents may also
request previous day notification.
"This is a great day for the residents of Kelowna. A system
is now in place that allows for the right to know when and what
pesticides are being sprayed. This will allow residents to take
precautions to avoid exposure to toxic pesticides,” Lloyd
Manchester, Director of EarthCare stated.
EarthCare has been advocating for a pesticide bylaw that would
ban the use of cosmetic pesticides for several years. City council
announced the results of a recent local survey, which indicated
that there is 62% support for a bylaw restricting the use of pesticides
on public and private property.
During Monday’s council session, Kelowna City staff also
requested $25,000 dollars for the ongoing operation of the registry,
research into the alternatives to pesticides, and a public education
program. This request likewise gained support from EarthCare. “We
are excited about the combination of a education program with the
pesticide registry. This will assist residents in getting their
lawns and yards off drugs and make our community a healthier place
to live in. The City has clearly committed to seeking alternatives
and educating both themselves and the public about pesticides. Good
for them,” Manchester praised.
Currently 35% of Canada's population is protected from exposure
to synthetic pesticides as a result of communities passing bylaws
that restrict and ban the use of cosmetic pesticides.
