City wins Earthcare enviro
award
For Immediate Release
December 17, 2004
Wonders never cease, especially at Christmas time.
The Kelowna based Canadian EarthCare Society has named the City
of Kelowna as the 2004 winner of the organization’s Business/Organization
of the Year Award for environmental recognition.
“I’m sure our selection surprises some, including
the City, however EarthCare believes the City has made a dramatic
shift in its thinking about pesticides and that deserved acknowledgement,”
EarthCare Executive Director Charlie Hodge said. “When Council
announced it was voluntarily renewing the pesticide registry for
this year, which we’d spearheaded the creation of last spring,
that frankly surprised us. That gesture cinched it for them,”
Up until that decision, Hodge said EarthCare was planning on giving
the award to the School Board for it’s forward thinking on
banning the use of cosmetic pesticides. “That was a wonderful
decision by them, but one that did not really shock us. The School
Board and staff have been more cognizant of the problems with pesticides
in the past few years than the City. I suppose, ironically the School
Board lost because they’ve done a better job in general the
past few years.”
The award was presented to councillor Sharon Shepherd Tuesday
night during EarthCare’s open house. EarthCare also announced
the Citizen of the Year winner as Susanne Stevenson who fought hard
to save beavers and their habitat in her neighborhood's adjacent
Facieux wildlife sanctuary. EarthCare Member of the Year went to
James Adams for his dedication and hard work.
At the open house EarthCare made two other significant announcements
including the kick off of an EarthCare Rain Barrel Campaign for
the Kelowna area. The organizations is selling environmentally friendly
50 gallon rain barrels to aid in water conservation for residents.
The organization also announced its agreement in principle on
lease of some 25 acres of land for a planned Wildlife Recover Centre
on land also hosting Eight Mile Ranch. For more information go to
