EarthCare celebrates successful lobby effort to maintain forest recreation access in BC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 10, 2004

EarthCare is celebrating a victory this week following Tuesday’s Throne Speech by Lieutenant Governor Iona Campagnolo. During her speech the Lieutenant Governor said the province, “will reinstate funding to maintain forest recreation roads and recreation sites in the Heartlands.”

“We are extremely pleased that EarthCare has been successful in changing the government’s mind on this issue,” says Lloyd Manchester, Director of the Canadian EarthCare Society (EarthCare) based in Kelowna. EarthCare has fought long and hard to maintain and preserve the forest recreation system of roads and campsites in this province, arguing that forest recreation is an extremely important value in B.C. and is a significant contributor to the economic, social, and cultural environment in this province.

“We have to thank all those people, tourists, local and regional governments and environmental organizations across the province who responded to our calls to tell the government to reverse their position. This is a clear example of how people can make a difference. They said loud and clear that they cared about our recreation system,” Manchester applauded.

Manchester explains that the recent announcement will have a direct benefit to our provincial parks system. It is estimated that 45 % of our Parks system is accessed through the forest service road system. Ensuring access to our parks system through the forest service network will now ensure that the roads are maintained and that environmental damage is minimized. This effort will now allow British Columbians to access our province is a safe manner, he suggests.

EarthCare will now request a meeting with the Ministry of Forests to clarify the increased budget details of this announcement, Manchester said.
