EarthCare extremely concerned with Kelowna's Pesticide Notification Registry process

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 17, 2004

The Canadian EarthCare Society (EarthCare) is extremely concerned with the Pesticide Notification Registry proposed by the City of Kelowna today (February 17th). “EarthCare requested a simple and effective pesticide registry system and also asked City staff to be involved in the development of the registry. There has been no consultation on this matter from the City. The City has only been speaking with the pesticide spray association regarding the requirements to register, and as such are not taking the best interests of the community in mind,” stated Lloyd Manchester, Director of EarthCare.

“What the City fails to understand is that commercial applicators are applying poisons to the environment that are mainly for cosmetic reasons. As well, commercial applicators are applying pesticides like Diazanon that are currently being phased out by the federal government and restricted from use by homeowners. Many municipalities around the country are banning this type of spraying in their communities and implementing programs that do not need the use of poisons,” states Manchester.

The City of Kelowna has established two notification categories in their registry system. They are a 12-24 hour notification, which requires a letter from a doctor - and a day of spray notification system where residents have to supply a reason for notification and the spray operator will “watch for applicable conditions.”

“That’s absurd. The whole intent of this registry should be to give proper notification and information to residents that are concerned about the effects of pesticides on their families and pets. This new system makes it restrictive for residents and tenants to get proper notification. No resident should have to justify why they do not want to be exposed to toxic sprays. As an effective registry - this is simply a bad joke.”
