If you’re interested in using up to one-third less water on
your lawn and garden, attend this Sunday’s rain barrel awareness
and water conservation day sale put on by the Canadian EarthCare Society.
Lloyd Manchester, of EarthCare, says not only
will their organization have both regular and hand-painted rainbarrels
on sale that day, they’ll also demonstrate how they work to catch
rainwater for use from the spigot for watering flower beds or lawns.
Rainwater is free of chlorine and naturally
soft, which is great for plants, notes Manchester.
It is an ancient technique that applies to
today’s need for water conservation.
The barrels can be connected to a soaker hose
or drip irrigation system, or just used to fill a watering can from
the spigot.
The system helps to divert roof runoff water
away from the foundation of the house, to be used where it can benefit
lawns and gardens.
There will also be a number of water conservation
products which can reduce the need for water for lawns and gardens
by 20 to 30 per cent.
For instance, Zeba is a biodegradable product
which is safe for use on lawns and uses unique, starch-based polymers.
It can be applied in dry form or added to water
for injection, and it only needs to be applied once a year.
Manchester said they also have a “truly organic” fertilizer
available that’s alfalfa-based.
The demonstrations and water-saving products
will be available Sunday, April 9, at Super Dave’s Craftsman,
1727 Dolphin Ave., from noon to 4 p.m.
