Help Protect Spruce Lake Area

A review of the 6-year-long land use planning process that led to Spruce Lake protected area is about to culminate, possibly in a decision to reduce or fragment Spruce Lake protected area.

A decision to strike at the one area for which naturalists and conservationists have most consistently sought protection since 1937 would represent a crisis for wilderness conservation in our province. For more info on this and other concerns please visit the CPAWS web site.

I am concerned that the government is considering reducing the size or deleting the South Chilcotin Mountains Park (Spruce Lake). The Mining Association of BC backed by Tech Cominco has been lobbying your government to dismantle this world-class park.

The original size was agreed to following a long public input process, and provided a minimum measure of protection for the unique and beautiful landscape and wildlife. Some species such as the Grizzly Bear and Bull Trout are already endangered. If the size of the park is reduced, opportunities for the recovery of endangered wildlife will be lost.

A reduction in park size will also affect wilderness recreation and tourism opportunities, which will in turn have a negative impact on the local economy. The thriving $11.4 million wilderness tourism industry is helping to diversify the local economy by reducing its dependence on industrial resource extraction.

Please respect the decision of the LRMP process and the hard work of the LRMP table members. I urge you to support maintaining the original size of the park and not advocate the position of the Mining Association of B.C. Please keep me informed of your actions to ensure the park remains intact.
